New Classes at the Studio: Handbuilding in Toronto and a Halloween Night at the Wheel

Rows of colourful studio glazes at Studio Ceramica in Toronto, ready for the final week of the 6-Week handbuilding course.

Two new ways to get your hands in clay are now open for booking at the studio. If you have been looking for handbuilding classes in Toronto, our newest course was built for you. And if you would rather start with a single night out, Halloween at the wheel is back for one night only.

A course that splits its time between the wheel and the workbench

The 6-Week Hybrid Pottery Wheel and Handbuilding Course starts on Thursday, November 5, and runs for six Thursday evenings, 6:30 to 9:30 PM, through December 10. $424.

The first half of the course is the wheel: centring clay, throwing, and trimming the pieces you make. The second half moves to the workbench, where the wheel course becomes a clay handbuilding workshop. You will spend those weeks hand building pottery from rolled slabs and coils, making the shapes a wheel simply cannot make, then glaze everything in the final week.

It is beginners welcome, and our instructors guide you at every step. Clay, tools, glazes, and firings are all included. Because every week builds on the one before it, check that you can make all six evenings before you register.

What happens on Halloween night?

On Saturday, October 31, from 6:30 to 9:00 PM, First Spin: Halloween Edition takes over the studio for one night only. $77.

It is our regular intro to pottery, dressed up for the occasion: spooky music, decorations, and candy, with costumes warmly invited. Think of it as a pottery taster class with a Halloween party wrapped around it. You get two and a half hours at the wheel with unlimited clay, and at the end you choose your favourite piece. Our technicians trim, fire, and glaze it for you, ready to pick up a few weeks later.

One small thing about costumes: keep them wheel friendly. Fitted, hair tied back, and nothing dangling near the wheel, and you are set.

New to the wheel entirely?

Halloween night is one way in, but it is not the only one. First Spin: Pottery Wheel Intro runs every week, all year: a single session at the wheel, guided the whole way, and a lovely first night with clay whether you come with a friend, make it a date, or take the evening for yourself. And when one night is not enough, you can browse everything on offer on our pottery classes page and find the course that fits.

Bookings are open now for both. We can't wait to welcome you to the studio.
